Dear Colleagues!

In the first instance I will give you all some highlights about post war Sri Lanka.

Our constant problem has hopefully been eliminated. The North and East of Sri Lanka which have fertile land and lovely beaches are now opened for business. The Government along with the IMF is trying to develop these areas.

AGN WAA had its mid year Training program in Bahrain at the end of April where we covered a number of international Auditing and Financial Reporting Standards.

We had good attendance and it went off well. This is also to remind all my colleagues that our Regional Conference will be held in South Africa from 25th to 28th November 2009 in Johannesburg. The pre-conference tour will commence on the 22nd of November. Our colleagues in South Africa, Iain and Albert, have gone through great pains to get the members and their spouses to join in this pre conference tour which will be to the Kruger National Park.

In times of economic uncertainty, it would be all too easy to merely cut back on spending but many caution this when it comes to training and development.

“Even in these uncertain times, AGN West Asia & Africa continues to see major opportunities and keep their focus on training and developing their members” said the AGN West Asia & Africa vice chairman Mr. Jawad Rasromani, following a successful training session held in Bahrain at the end of April this year.

Al Mezan Bureau, the AGN Member Firm in Bahrain & Qatar, organized a three day IFRS/ISA Training workshop for members of the West Asia & Africa Region from 30th April to 2nd May 2009. The event was attended by a total of 20 representatives of AGN member firms including members from South Africa, UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. Ms. Shams Albaharna, from Al Mezan Bureau, added: “The training was very successful and it reviewed the latest changes on some of the IFRS/ISA’s which are for implementation in 2009.

”The training was run exclusively for AGN WAA members and it was tailored to their business industry and day to day issues. The training workshop focused on various IFRS & ISA’s and it was conducted by Mr. Sinniah Elangko who holds qualifications in FC, CIMA UK and MBA.

The work shop was opened and concluded by the Regional Chairman Mr. Sunil Abeyratna. He added the training was a big success as it exposed AGN members to the recent changes in the IFRS & ISA standards. The Training workshop was followed by the regional Board of Directors Meeting attended by representatives from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Nigeria & Bahrain. The Board also agreed to hold the next Annual Regional Meeting in South Africa and it will be hosted by one of the local AGN member firms; McMurray Aldum.

Introduction

MCMurray Aldum Inc and Mc Murray Aldum Accounting Tax and Professional Services (Pty) Ltd is a new concept in accounting and client service management in the financial services field. The company was borne out of a consolidation of various businesses, the original business Iain McMurray and Associates was started in March 1994 as a traditional audit firm based in Rosebank, Johannesburg, South Africa.

They moved to their current premises in June 1998 after expanding beyond the capability of the offices in Rosebank, Johannesburg, South Africa. Then followed various mergers, in March 1997 Ian McMurray and Associates merged with A.W Aldum & Co. to form McMurray Aldum Inc. AW Aldum & Co was the small audit firm where Iain Mc Murray, the principal partner, was articled. This merger resulted in Mr. A W Aldum retiring but remaining on as a consultant, till today, to facilitate skills transfer. The final merger was between McMurray Aldum Inc, New Life Accounting Services cc, an accounting services company, which started in February 1999, and Bruce C. Gordon & Co an audit practice, which started in March 1999. The merged company traded as MGK and Mc Murray Aldum Inc. eventually the MGK name was discontinued and the audit practice traded as Mc Murray Aldum Inc. In 2008 the company furthered acquired the business of Accounting Taxation Consultants and after 12 months of managing the businesses in two businesses under two brands we now have merged the two brands into Mc Murray Aldum.

The company has grown through these mergers and organic growth from a small single management business to a total business unit that employs in excess of 37 staff. The company's ethos and approach has been maintained from the approach of the smaller entities to ensure that as an organisation we continue to service the small to medium entities but with service products and level only previously offered by large service companies at a high cost. The organisation is geared towards the accounting and service industry to small and medium size businesses, and has a strong auditing and taxation department.

Vision & Mission

The company’s mission is to give value added advice and service to businesses and to act as a business partner to its clients. Through innovation, application and communication the business shall endeavour to improve the financial affairs of a client in an ethical, professional manner.

Audit Concept to International Associates

Mc Murray Aldum Inc is a member of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors in South Africa which subscribes to the highest level of International auditing and accounting standard. The auditing environment in South Africa offers a high level of professionalism due to the extensive peer review process and the constant Continued Professional Education requirements.

Our firm has established a strong independent attest division and it is our intention to improve the skill levels of all staff and to ensure that we as Mc Murray Aldum can offer a client service which is equal to or greater than any service our client can receive from firms in South Africa.

We also trade in a very low cost economy in US$ terms and the relative cost of skills and labour in Southern Africa is low with a recent poll reflecting that on the Big Mac economic scale South Africa is the cheapest economy in the world.

This results in a situation where we have skilled employees who are in a position to be contracted out to international markets at a very low economic cost and can still deliver attest function work at the highest level of knowledge. We also in a position to assist with the completion of federal and state tax returns in the USA.

We therefore wish to offer professional service to fellow attest function associates whereby the professional services of an audit person or audit team are made available at a cost for an assignment of no less than 60 hours (excluding travel time) and as such we shall pay all the costs relevant to that staff including airfare, accommodation and local travel and the client (associate) shall pay a fixed hourly rate for such staff member. The rates are as follows (priced in US$ for convenience). Please note that this charge shall exclude travel time and shall only be client hours that are charged.

Senior auditor
The cost would be US$95 per hour
Audit Team

An audit team consists of three persons and as such would be a complete attest team and the cost would be US$250 per hour for the entire team.

We trust that you understand the concept and should you have any queries in this regard please contact the writer by e mail (ian.mcmurray@auditor.co.za). Awaiting your reply.
