Dear
Colleagues,
As
I write this last WorldwideLink letter (my
term as chair will conclude this Fall), I look
out at a North American Region marked by tremendous
energy and activity.
We
are not a region you can easily stereotype: our 55 member
firms include firms with $2 million in revenue and firms
with $75 million in revenue.
Some
of our firms are experts in hedge funds, others condominium
associations; some in private foundations, others in
real estate or restaurants; some in health care, others
in banking, construction or high technology.
Some
firms serve only privately-held companies; some also
serve publicly traded companies. Some serve nonprofit
associations; others serve government entities.
What
characterizes our Region and draws us together (as different
as our firms may appear) are our entrepreneurialism,
our passion to serve clients well, and our commitment
to helping one another.
There
is also something extra, something special:
our members genuinely like and respect one another;
we like being together; we like helping one another.
It is hard to know how such camaraderie develops but we know enough to nurture
it.
Among
the highlights of an active 2006 year:
- 55
member firms in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto
Rico
- Canada’s
6 firms actively engaged in a Canadian practice management
group; looking to recruit new Canadian members; hosting
the AGN World Congress in Montreal next month
- New
member firms in Seattle, Washington; Tampa, Florida;
and the state of Wisconsin
- Over
100 partners from 36 member firms providing a leadership,
teaching or resource role to their fellow members in
the AGN North American Region.
- Over
140 partners from 50 firms participating in Advanced
Partner Training, in teleconferences and face to face
meetings throughout North America
- 195
(!!) staff members from 26 US firms attending tax and
auditing training sessions
- Regular
teleconferences with a specialized focus: international
tax; tax exempt organizations; mergers & acquisitions;
human resources; information technology; marketing
and more. My e-mail this morning announced a tax sharegroup
teleconference: “Canadian Business Entering the
US Marketplace”
- A
June meeting of 16 IT directors and managers in Austin,
Texas
- An
outstanding conference held in Philadelphia last May:
3 days, 121members and 29 guests. In attendance: managing
partners; partners working in audit, nonprofit organizations
and business valuations
- A
meeting of tax partners from US firms scheduled for
October in Las Vegas
- An
invigorated sharegroup of firm administrators and HR
managers tackling issues of recruiting and retaining
the best people
- A
revived SEC sharegroup, which will support those firms
with public company practices
- A
dedicated staff of 5 at AGN Headquarters in Colorado
who keep our meetings, teleconferences, trainings,
sharegroups and website running at a vigorous pace.
I’m
out of breath!
As
we head into the Fall, I look forward to seeing members
from around the world at the September World Congress
in Montreal, Canada.
It
has been both a privilege and an enjoyment to serve as
Chair of AGN’s North American Region this past
year.
May
Peace be with you.

AGN-NA
is keeping Hickory Ridge Conference Center in Lisle, Illinois
busy this summer and fall with our audit and tax staff training
programs.
Audit
training
Response was so strong to the recently completed Levels II and III sessions that
each Level was expanded to include two sessions occurring simultaneously. Level
I scheduled for September 25-27 has already reached the maximum level – 26 – of
participants allowed by AuditWatch.
“These
numbers are a great testament to AGN-NA members’ commitment
to staff retention through development,” Nathalie
Champagne, AGN-NA Director of Share/Study Groups, said.
Registration for Levels IV and V, to be held later in
the Fall, is as strong, she said, noting that this is
the strongest participation she’s seen in the staff
training programs since she took over its administration
in 2003.
Additional
demand from members for a third session of Level II is
prompting Nathalie to explore the potential for a class
in November. Please contact Nathalie if your firm has
potential participants for Level II.
Tax
training
Levels 1, 2 and 3 are scheduled for October, and November and 39 individuals
have already registered for the programs.
Level 1 Tax does not yet have the minimum (15), so if your firm has people
for Level 1, and hasn’t registered them, please do so ASAP.
Don’t
forget that AGN-NA member Lance Weiss, Shapiro Flom & Company
LLC, St. Louis, is instructing Level 3 again this year.
At
the request of members, AGN-NA is considering the
addition of Level 4 and 5 Tax
Staff
Training Sessions. Currently AGN, through its arrangement
with Surgent McCoy, CPE, LLC, offers Tax Staff Training
Levels 1 through 3. Included in preliminary topics
for Level 4 & 5. |
Level 4: Tax Planning
- Top
Rainmaking Strategies for the closely-held business
- Selected Critical issues for the Estate Planner
- Negotiations and Tax Aspects of Buying and Selling
a Business
|
Level 5: Technical Training
- Advanced LLC and Partnership Tax Strategies and
Issues
- Advanced S Corporation Tax Issues
- The Best Federal Tax Update Course by Surgent McCoy
|
Please let us know if your firm is interested
in sending participants to Level 4 and Level 5. If
we have enough interest, AGN will try to set up these
courses for this year. Please email nchampagne@agn.org
with the names of each participant for each level. |

July
1 marks the beginning of a new year for AGN-NA’s
sharegroups – our most important member

New
Core Team Leaders have stepped up to provide leadership
for the most active sharegroups
and the CTLs have already
teleconferenced to begin planning the sharegroups’ agendas
for the year.
“We
can always use more good ideas,” Nathalie
Champagne, AGN-NA Director of Share/Study groups says, “so,
we are happy to have more Core Team Leaders for our
sharegroups.” She encourages any member who
has an interest in helping to plan sharegroup collaboration
efforts and flex their leadership muscles to contact
her.
Below
is a partial list of sharegroups, their core team
leaders and the meeting schedules.
If you
are a participant in one or more of the
sharegroups, please
mark your calendars. Please check the “Program & Events” calendar
at www.agn-na.org for updates, and the “Sharegroups” section

Members
of the Advanced Partner Training Development
team are cautiously optimistic that the team was on the
right
track when it designed AGN NA's newest continuous learning
program, which began in 2005 in St. Louis and continued
in 2005 in Philadelphia.
Evaluations
from the “class of ‘06” session
taught by Tim Bartz at the Westin Philadelphia indicate
very high satisfaction with the two-day kickoff program.
“Phase
I, which is the 2-day full group seminar, is working
as well as we expected,” said Charlie McGimsey,
member of the APT team. “Phase II, which are the
study groups, have exceeded our expectations, and we’re
really pleased and, frankly amazed, at that!”
Pat
Evans, another APT Development team member reports on
Phase III in his firm: “We just conducted a staff
meeting internally on coaching and our staff really got
into it.” Pat
went on to say that he hopes the study group members
are taking the modules and learning they’ve benefited
from and teaching it in the firm.
“That’s the real key to the long term success of this
program, as well as strengthening each of member firms and
doing a better job of developing our people,” Evans
said.
Below
is a schedule of the 14 study groups and their planned
activities. If you’re a member of any of
these groups, please mark your calendars and plan to
participate.
The
Team is already discussing plans for 2007. If you’ve
not attended AGN-NA Advanced Partner
Training,
please talk to those in your firm who have and find out
why you should
register for 2007 and get involved in a study
group.

The AGN-NA HR-FA sharegroup core team leaders
have been busy since late April working on defining the
best practices in the following areas:
- Career
Path Develoment
- Performance
Evaluations (Core Competencies)
- Personal
Profiling Tools
- On
Campus Recruiting (Career Fairs, Internships, Scholarships)
- Mentoring
A deadline and method of dissemination to all member firms
has not yet been determined, however, it is likely that
the knowledge transfer will occur electronically only,
via the HR-FA sharegroup website pages at www.agn-na.org
or via a newly-created BLOG.
The
Digest evolved from the third objective of the ’06
Strategic Plan, conceived by the Board of Directors in
November, 2005. The plan objectives are:
|
Knowledge
and Resource Sharing – AGN-NA firms will have
access to and actively use a broad range of shared
talent, resources and best practices. |
|
Training – AGN-NA
firms will have access to high quality, comprehensive
training programs and evidence their satisfaction
with high participation levels. |
|
Human Resources – AGN-NA firms will attract, develop and retain the highest
quality staff. |
|
Member
Performance – A majority of AGN-NA firms will
be in the top quartile of profitability within their
peer group. |
|
Reputation
and Recognition – AGN-NA will be recognized
as an association of quality firms offering the industry’s
best resources and solutions. |
The HR-FA Core Team Leaders met in Chicago last April and developed five pages
of recommendations for achieving the 3rd objective, one of which is the Digest.
More information on the other recommendations will become available as the
CTLs attack implementation.
