Letter from the International Chair

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing this letter as I return from Bangkok, where I attended the Asia Pacific Regional meeting. There were 36 enthusiastic and highly motivated delegates in attendance.

This was a record number for the region, and it comes on the heels of also record setting regional meetings in Budapest and Philadelphia. It is my opinion that AGN International is a healthy, vibrant, and growing organization. All three of these meetings were attended by new as well as prospective new members.

As I reflect on these meetings and the challenges ahead, I am both cautious and excited about the work that must be undertaken to keep AGN at the head of the pack. Our two most mature regions cannot become complacent with this status.

The rest of the world is growing at a pace that is greater than anything we have seen in the past. With over half of the world’s population in the Asia Pacific Region, there are great opportunities as well as great challenges.

This future can either overwhelm us
or provide great opportunity.

We have a saying in the Southern United States that when you are up to your knees in alligators, it is hard to remember that the goal is to drain the swamp. I think we are a lot like that in AGN. We are so focused on our immediate firm and individual problems and progress, we don’t take the time to plan for our collective future. This future can either overwhelm us or provide great opportunity.

The first step in the process is to get to know one another and share our knowledge, concerns, and dreams. The next opportunity to do this is the World Congress in Montreal; I hope you have registered to attend.

The International Board will be meeting in Montreal on September 16, 2006 to review our strategic plan and make any adjustments. Our commitment is to be a member driven association, so I encourage all members and executive committees to share your concerns and ideas with us.

Thanks for the opportunity to serve as Chairman, and I look forward to being with you in Montreal.

Many thanks
