Hi Friends and Colleagues,

The new year has begun and before we know it, it’s already over a quarter of a year gone. I pray the Year of the Rat brings you all and your family good health, happiness, wisdom and prosperity.

To the new members who have joined us, I welcome them and hope they grow with AGN.

This is the busy time of the year where deadlines have to be met and compliances, which seemed endless, have to be adhered to. Indeed the accountancy practices and the service industries are facing the greatest challenges to ensure transparency and corporate governance. Companies are more aware of their social responsibility and there are movements of accountability for environmental issues.

Times have changed and we have to move on with different assurance landscapes and environment. So our member firms must continuously change and adopt worldwide accepted standards and ensure financial disciplines in line with globalisation.

Before disbanding, our World Quality Assurance committee met in New York to deliberate and set up new guidelines for assurances now that we have determined that we shall be an "association of choice". Very soon the details will be given to the members.

I have visited Bahrain at the end of October last year to attend the West Asia and Africa region’s meeting. I thank them for the kind hospitality and warm welcome. It was an interesting country to visit and a great experience to know the sentiments of the region and their requirements.

The Mak operations have resigned from our organization. Discussions are currently going on with a number of interested firms in the UAE and appointment of a member there is anticipated in the near future. As regards the operations of the region, Sunil Abeyratna of Abeyratna & Co, our member firm in Sri Lanka has taken on the position of Acting Chair of the region, and the secretarial functions will be undertaken in the short term by the International Executive Office in London.

By the time this issue is circulated to the members, the International Board would have met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This again will be an intensive meeting with brainstorming on concrete strategies.

Several of the regions are scheduling their meetings at this time of the year. The Asia Pacific region will be having their regional meeting at the end of April in Macau, with the North American region following up in May in Seattle and the European region in Stockholm in June. Certainly all members are welcome to such meetings.

As usual, the Executive office is busy locating and expanding offices in order to have as many AGN offices strategically located as possible. This is by no means an easy task. But we will indeed try our best to ensure that our members can have contacts in a wide geographical coverage.

One of our Chinese member firms (China Regal) has expanded to several locations in China. Hopefully, this would give interested parties a greater avenue to have better accessibility to the East. Elsewhere, we have also expanded into several countries and the information is available on our website.

I shall inform you of what has transpired at the International Board meeting in March in our next issue. Meanwhile, take care and God bless.
