Dear
Friends and Colleagues,
I am glad to report that the majority of North American firms ended 2008 in a very strong financial position. And, I can also say with some certainty that most of us are bracing for a much different result in 2009.
To say that 2009 is shaping up to be a challenging year is probably an understatement, given the state of the global economy.
Times like this bring the most important questions to the surface quickly. Partners in AGN member firms are asking each other:
• What is our plan for how we’ll adapt to persevere in this recession?
• How can we best help our clients to make it through?
At the Executive Committee and Board level of AGN North America, we’re asking questions like:
• How will the economy affect NA members’ participation in our May North American Regional meeting?
• What, if any, will be the effect of the economy on our annual staff training programs?
• How will the economy affect international members’ attendance at the World Congress in Chicago, which is being hosted this year by North America?
• What, if any, will be the impact on membership – both serving existing members and recruiting new members?
There are more questions than answers right now. Contracts have been signed and, in the case of AGN’s meetings, real money has already been spent.
But let me remind you: associations -- like AGN -- have a special role to play during times of uncertainty. The US Navy SEALS creed probably says it better than I can:
The lives of my teammates and the success of the mission depend on me (accountability)
If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. (resilience)
In the worst of conditions, the legacy of my teammates steadies my resolve and silently guides my every deed. (purpose)
Despite many uncertainties, we in AGN must unite in our legacy of accountability and resilience to ask - and answer - these questions. While the temptation to bury our heads in the sand is strong, ultimately, facing “the bitter facts” is the first step for going from “good to great”.
It’s definitely a time when being part of a group dedicated to sharing best practices – worldwide – will “steady our resolve”. Now, more than ever, we need to recommit to strengthen our communication with each other -- whether it be face-to-face or virtually.
We know that each firm will answer these questions to the best of their ability and for what is best for the firm. Please remember, too, that together, as an association of independent firms worldwide, we can weather this current challenge better than alone.
I hope to see many of you North Americans in Denver in May and many more of you from around the world in Chicago in October. We will do everything we can to plan both of these events for the maximum in information sharing and value for attendance.

The AGN-NA Executive Committee approved underwriting the costs of licensing a streaming video employee training service called LEARNING ON CALL a year ago. The service includes a growing library of over 200 top quality education and training videos in over 30 HR, management and employee training categories.
After a simple one-time only on-line registration, the service is available to all employees 24/7/365 for free viewing on their desktops or laptops, or on in-house training programs.
The service is being provided by Learning Communications, LLC, an experienced training resource affiliate of our member firm in Irvine, California: Robert R. Redwitz & Co.
In order to handle the registration of your employees and to handle any IT issues or suggestions, your firm needs to designate a coordinator in your organization with whom we and Learning Communications may communicate.
The training videos may be accessed at an AGN-branded website for Learning on Call: www.learningoncall.com. Please check it out.

If you’d like to continuously explore all the non-technical aspects of leading an accounting firm practice with other AGN-NA partners, principals and senior managers, then the AGN-NA Advanced Partner Training program is for you.
The next class will be 19 to 21 May 2009 in Denver, immediately following the NARM. APT participants will be able to attend both the Afterburner session and APT at no cost. Talk to your managing partner about getting involved and e-mail Nathalie Champagne at nchampagne@agn.org to find out more about the program.
There are many benefits to the program, but one of the most important is the opportunity to get to know at least 8-10 other AGN-NA firm partners better.
And, congratulations to the class which began in 2005, members of which are now about to graduate after completing four years in the program and the prerequisite number of modules. The graduation ceremony will be held in Denver during lunch on Tuesday, 18 May.
