Dear Friends,

Having been just elected Chair of the North American region, I wanted to share with you some of the projects that we are undertaking in accordance with our strategic plan.

In order to benchmark the firms of AGN North America, we have decided to conduct three surveys.  In 2007, we completed a Partner Satisfaction Survey.  In 2008, this will be followed by a Staff Survey, and in 2009, a Client Survey.  This rotation will continue every three years so that we can benchmark our association for the previous three years against the current year’s results, as well as each of the firms.

The surveys were emailed to all 572 partners in AGN North America.  We had 450 surveys returned for a participation rate of 79%.  Of the 53 firms participating, 22 firms had 100% participation and only 6 firms had less than 50% participation.

Doug Griest, Ph.D. from Management Psychology Group, P.C. assisted us in analyzing the results of the survey.  Each firm received their firm’s results as well as the overall results of all of the partners.

In order to benchmark the firms of AGN North America, we conducted 3 surveys.
The overall results were very interesting and favorable
but illuminated a few areas for us to explore.

The combined results were also broken down by age, years as partner, numbers of partners, number of offices, city size, gender and partners participating in Advanced Partner Training.  Doug Griest gave a presentation to the Board of Directors on November 1, 2007 in Chicago. The overall results were very interesting and favorable, but illuminated a few areas for us to explore.

We are preparing the staff survey now and will distribute during the summer of 2008.  We look forward to seeing those results and determining how they dovetail into the partner’s survey and what information we can extrapolate to improve the firms and AGN.

In addition,  AGN-NA University has wide support from the members.  Our attendance for the various levels of audit and tax staff training programs is at an all time high (306) and the results of the evaluations are excellent.
These are exciting times for CPA firms and I am looking forward to my term this next year and working with the Executive Committee and North American Board in 2008.  If anyone has any comments, questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Opening general session
to feature leading expert on
Four Generations in the Workplace

Today, there are four generations in the workplace; do you know what makes each one tick?

For the first time in history, four distinct generations—Matures, Boomers, Xers, and Millennials—are employed side by side in the workplace. With differing values and seemingly incompatible views on leadership, these generations have stirred up unprecedented conflict in the business world.

Effective management of this generational divide is vital to longevity and success. In fact, it is the most important demand your firm can make of its leaders.

Cam Marston will share his generational insight, concrete examples and specific approaches to help frustrated managers on Monday, May 19 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m at the North American Regional Meeting at the Grand Hyatt, Seattle, WA.  All AGN-NA MAP seminar and sharegroup participants are invited to participate to learn new ways to build the individual connections needed to boost employee performance and retention.

Founder and president of
Generational Insights,
Cam Marston has spent
years studying the collective
histories and traits of the
Matures, Boomers,
Xers and Millenials to
CAM MARSTON discover what makes each
generation tick. This insight
will help you bring out the best in your
employees and colleagues, and have a
profound impact on your success.

Learn how each generation developed its
core values, how that manifests in the
workplace today, and why they can all not
only operate alongside each other, but do
so with extraordinary success.

AGN-NA joins Beta Alpha Psi Advisory Forum

With the current staff shortage, AGN-NA member firms have beefed up their involvement with area Beta Alpha Psi chapters to build awareness about the benefits of working with local and regional firms.

Until recently, however, AGN-NA firms were barred from participating at the regional BAP meetings, where all the chapters officers and faculty advisors in the state and surrounding states were present.

Spurred by AGN-NA’s strategic plan goal to assist firms with recruiting and retention, AGN-NA has become a member of the Beta Alpha Psi Advisory Forum. It is the job of the BAP Advisory Forum members to provide support to the chapters at these regional meetings by conducting technical and professional workshops for the chapter officers and faculty advisors.

BAP has divided the college chapters into eight regions based on geography.  All of the chapters in each region meet annually in the Spring of the year.

A task force made up of AGN-NA volunteers will coordinate the firms’ support in each BAP region.  Please contact your regional task force member to see how your firm can assist.

AICPA Professional Ethics Division proposes new Association definition

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Following the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) Ethics committee’s adoption in 2007 of a new definition of what constitutes an association and what constitutes a network, the AICPA Professional Ethics Executive Committee (PEEC) is proposing some clarifications—as well.

Proposed Interpretation 101-17,—“Networks and Network Firms”—provides an interpretation of Rule 101, “Independence” for firms and entities cooperating in an association for the purpose of enhancing capabilities and sharing certain characteristics.

Specifically, such entities would be deemed part of a network of firms and therefore must be independent of certain attest clients of the other network firms.

For purposes of applying the interpretation, shared characteristics would be:

  • Use of a common name or brand;
  • Common control among the firms;
  • Certain profits and costs, excluding costs of operating the association; costs of developing audit methodologies, manuals and training courses; and other costs immaterial to the firm;
  • Common business strategies  that involve ongoing collaboration among the firms whereby the firms are responsible for implementing the association’s strategy and are held accountable for performance pursuant to that strategy
  • Significant part of professional resources or,
  • Common quality control policies and procedures designed and monitored by the association and that the firms are required to implement

If only a subset of firms within a network share one or more of the above characteristics, the subset and not the entire association would be considered a network. As proposed, the interpretation would be effective for engagements covering periods beginning on or after December 15, 2009.

The exposure draft period closed November 13, 2007.

The Boards of Directors of AGN-NA and AGN International, together with legal counsel, have carefully studied the definitions presented by both IFAC and AICPA PEEC, and conclude that AGN-NA and AGN International clearly have always been and are now associations and will continue to act in all ways to maintain association status.
