Dear colleagues,

I begin my term as chair of AGN International, Ltd. with words of gratitude and praise for my predecessor, Horst Schaffer, of Schaffer & Partner. It was Horst¹s energy and vision that resulted in so many of us convening in Beijing, China at the end of September.

It was certainly a memorable and educational trip and meeting — as you can see pictorially throughout this issue. I find myself still trying to assimilate and organize my thoughts and reactions to what I saw and learned while there. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such an experience.

I would be remiss if I didn¹t say that the opportunity to interact with 75-or-so AGN members for five days on the pre-Congress tour was every bit as extraordinary and memorable. To have the luxury of spending time together at meals, in the bus, in airport terminals, and on our tours was every bit as enlightening as what we saw and learned about China.

A very attractive and impressive stage backdrop illuminating AGN's worldwide focus greeted members as they converged for the opening session at the Kempinski Hotel in Beijing. The Chinese host firms — China Regal and Fiducia — extended personal welcomes as well.

While I've been an active member of this organization for 10 years, and participated in just about all the non-North American-hosted World Congresses that have occurred since our firm joined — Rome, Sydney, Berlin, Madrid — this trip really underscored for me the potential power of our AGN relationships. You just can't get to know someone — and trust in their capabilities and instincts — unless you spend time with them.

Yes, our traditional World Congress format — three days of meeting and social events — is helpful in doing that. Yet, I know that those of us who journeyed together for five days in China are way ahead in that department now.

I hope that our French Canadian friends are successful in putting together some additional pre and post meeting trips in the Fall of 2006 so that more AGN members can have the opportunity of spending quality time together. If they do, please make every effort to work your travel schedule around to being part of these relationship-building opportunities.

After the China experience, I'm convinced that we need to spend more time together to get to know each other and talk amongst ourselves. Our association will be all the stronger for the relationships we form both business and personal.

Going forward from the base well-established by my predecessors Horst, Steve Kass, Steven Jeffcott, Harris Rothstein my goals for the next two years remain the same:

  • generate more worldwide business amongst members, especially in China
  • maintain strong independent member firms dedicated to quality services
  • have full geographical coverage
  • continue to focus on knowledge accumulation and management primarily through the AGN website

I will spend more time in future editions elaborating on these topics and how your AGN Board continues to work in these areas.

As we wind down 2005, and look forward to 2006, my primary goal is to encourage each and everyone to get — and stay — involved in AGN. The relationships and the business-generating results are well worth it!

Many thanks
