Coming away from the recent conference in China I believe there were two prevailing thoughts occupying most of the delegates minds: a) Wow, there is a monumental number of people/consumers and work force here! And b) How are we going to get a piece of the action for our clients?

The mystique of China was at least partially broken down with some interesting ideas and presentations at the sessions. However, I believe the challenge of "cracking it here" was not that obvious at the end of the last session, or perhaps even by the last downed beer.

We, the Asia Pacific members of AGN International have it all in front of us. Juergen Kracht and his team and Mr. He of China Regal gave us a glimpse of what resources AGN has in China. However, we need to do more. There is no doubt that the Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing and perhaps the most challenging and potentially rewarding region in the world.

Europe and the US in particular have made it clear, that they want to know more. It is our job to demonstrate the capabilities in the region.

Doing business successfully in Asia Pacific involves a detailed understanding of not only the local country laws but also more importantly, the interplay between the country of origin and the region in general.

Apart from international tax planning, other initiatives such as developing and making available the skills of local business consultants, politicians, financiers and business brokers is a resource we need to build and in many cases, promote.

There must be cooperation within a country where more than one AGN member is represented, in order to achieve the best result and service for the inbound business as a natural outcome.

Thankfully, as a group we have some examples of what other regions have been able to achieve. The North American and European groups, in particular, have developed significant Intellectual Property, which Asia Pacific will consider in its plans to foster improved opportunities and resources for the rest of the world to access.
We do have some talented members and valuable resources in the region. We need to showcase this and plug any gaps. Watch this space!

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Greg Wanchap for his efforts as the retiring Chairman for the region. I look forward to the challenges ahead and to demonstrating the expertise and compelling choice AGN is and will continue to be as accountants and business advisers across the Asia Pacific region.
