Dear Colleagues,

As I write this, I couldn't have asked for a better start to my term as Chair of the North American region, both from a membership growth perspective and a regional development perspective.

An application has been received and is in the approval process from a very good firm in Wisconsin, and we are in very promising discussions with a prospective member firm in Seattle. We have been without representation in both these states for quite some time, and these firms will add immeasureably to our region and to the organization.

Representatives from both firms will be present at our North American regional meeting, May 22-25 in Philadelphia.

The strategic planning process I mentioned in the last issue is evolving into a living, breathing document, much of which is already being implemented by our Denver office. One of the strongest elements in our process is the evolution of "AGN-NA University".

Throughout its long history, North American regional members have always had a commitment to education -- primarily geared toward training young, inexperienced staff. Early on, the region developed and sponsored annual
audit training programs
for young staff. More recently, we've added tax training programs.

These training programs occur every year and are well-supported by members. We are fortunate that in our region, the majority of our members operate under the same auditing and tax infrastructure, which makes creating these technical training programs efficient and affordable.

Like many in our profession, however, we were guilty of viewing our training programs as only necessary for our inexperienced staff. Worse, for experienced staff, "CPE" (Continuing Professional Education) had become viewed as perfunctory — a requirement for keeping our licenses — and, perhaps, even a nuisance.

Then, in the 90's, the AGN-NA Future Leaders Training program was born out of recognition that helping member firms train their future firm leaders would strengthen the profitability and performance of member firms. This program helped change North American members' attitude about learning; training was no longer just for the most inexperienced people.

We all need to be continuous learners: what we know today is not going to be nearly as valuable tomorrow, especially in this rapidly-changing environment, and more importantly, it can be fun and rewarding!

This shift in understanding led to the creation of our Advanced Partner Training (APT) program. We're very proud of this new program, which in its initial year (2005), attracted 113 AGN-NA firm partners to a two-day training program on such topics as "Retaining Your Brightest and Best Employees", "Developing a Culture of Accountability", "Improving Client Relationships" and "Coaching for Improved Performance."

Not only did the North American member firm partners sit in a room for two days to discuss these topics, they signed up for follow-up study groups, which continued to meet regularly via teleconference or face-to-face through
the next 12 months.

For me, personally, involvement in APT and my study group activities has been a highlight of the last 12 months. Not only have I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge, but I¹ve gotten to know eight more AGN-NA members much better than I ever would have otherwise. I have come to rely on their counsel and look forward to our meetings.

Reflecting on these phenomena, it became obvious that AGN-NA members' commitment to continuous, life-long learning and skills building deserved a more appropriate representation: our training programs aimed at specific
experience levels more accurately reflect a curriculum available through a university — hence, "AGN-NA University" was born.

If you visit www.agn-na.org and hover your mouse over "Programs & Events", you¹ll be able to see what has become of our "CPE" section and how extensive North America's learning opportunities are.

AGN-NA University is alive and well in 2006. Advanced Partner Training is being offered again in Philadelphia in May as part of our North American regional meeting. Information on our 2006 technical (audit and tax) staff
training programs is available in the article below.

And, we're pleased that the instructors of the 2006 Future Firm Leaders program have chosen to hold this year's program in Montreal this September, immediately after the AGN World Congress.

AGN-NA "U" represents just one aspect of North American strategic thinking. In future issues of the Link, I¹ll address the activities associated with some of the other aspects.

Meantime, North Americans look forward to the end of our "busiest season" and getting together at our meeting in Philadelphia, May 22-25. The grid elsewhere in this section of the Link will give you a good idea of what North Americans will be focusing on in Philadelphia.

That city is currently celebrating the 300th birthday of its favorite son — Ben Franklin. In his Poor Richard¹s Almanac Franklin wrote:

"If you would not be forgotten as soon as you're dead and rotten, either write
things worth reading or do things worth the writing."

I think North American Region members are doing "things worth the writing" and I'm pleased to be able to write about them. I look forward to enhancing my learning and celebrating this quintessential American's birthday with my North American colleagues in Philadelphia in May.

If your firm has potential candidates to attend these programs, make sure you confirm their registrations just as soon as you receive notification that registration is open to ensure your participants get a spot!

How much? (See 2005 summary table; costs in 2006 may increase slightly due to increased fees.) Costs are pooled and divided up equally by the number of participants. The costs for the 3-day courses include travel, instructor's fees, lodging, and manual/book fees. Participating firms will be billed for the training after the course has taken place.

To register you will need to login as a member to access the registration page. Class size is limited to 25 students for each Audit session and 35 for each Tax session.
