Focusing on the Future... and Forward

Focusing on the Future... and Forward was the theme for the 2017 North American Regional Meeting, held June 20-22 in Pittsburgh, PA, home of AGN member firm Sisterson & Co.  A special focus on what's next for AGN member firms, the profession and the world included sessions created to help members not only look into the future, but to share strategies and concepts to help them survive and thrive well into the next decade. From technology to innovation to economics, topics addressed many of the key issues and opportunities for today's independent accounting and advisory businesses.

Welcoming 14 new Canadian members and three new US firms to their first AGN meeting, the region hosted 235 delegates and their guests, VIPs, AGN staff, speakers and resource partners from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Spain, UK, and USA. Additionally, delegates participated in thought leadership sessions and specialized tracks for US Tax, Canadian Technical issues, US Audit & Accounting, Not-for-Profit, Business Valuations, Human Resources, Practice Management, and IT.

As all AGN members know, bringing each of those specialties together on a social level is important to facilitate camaraderie and relationship building. This year’s social events included an elegant dinner at Pittsburgh’s historic Duquesne Club, an active team scavenger hunt on the Penn State Campus followed by dinner-with-a-view on top of Mount Washington, and finally a fun night at PNC Park where members got to tour the Pittsburgh Pirates’ stadium and try their skills in the batting cages. There were many laughs among friends old and new, and many new connections made.

Thought leaders L. Gary Boomer (Boomer Consulting, Inc.), Ken Pyle (DFDR Consulting), Carl Peterson (AICPA), and Anirban Basu (Sage Policy Group, Inc.) challenged attendees to look up from their day-to-day issues and consider their position in their market, the profession and the economy overall. One very popular and dynamic presentation was focused on CPAs: The Next Generation and was presented by Brad Self, Chief Talent Officer of Clark Schaefer Hackett.

Prior to NARM, Brad also kicked off the New AGN ADVANCE Executive Leadership program with a 5-hour workshop on Personal Leadership Effectiveness. Over 40 partners from North America, Australia and Europe attended for insight into their personal style and how it impacts the firm. If you missed it, the second Workshop will be held October 22 in Nashville, TN in conjunction with the North American Practice Management Conference.

The 2018 North American Regional Meeting will be held in Austin, TX, June 6 - 8, 2018. More information will be shared later this year. We look forward to having you join us!
