| Day 6 – Wednesday, September 24, 2008 |
This promises to be a spectacular day. We will visit one of the most important tourist sights in Brazil and indeed in the continent of South America itself……..the waterfalls of Iguassu.
Iguassu - see video
It is listed by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity and the area includes subtropical forests with very rich flora and fauna.
The entire waterfall system comprises of 275 falls with a flow capacity that equals the Victoria Falls and which is three times greater than that of Niagara. The falls stretch for some 2.7 kms and some of them are as high as 82 meters with the average being 64 meters.
The single most spectacular is the “Garganta del Diablo” (the Devil’s Throat) that is a U-shaped fall, 150 meters wide along a 700 meters cliff. The morning will be spent visiting the Brazilian side of these falls with an option of taking an Macuco Boat Ride in an open boat to the very edge of the bottom of the falls; you are guaranteed extreme excitement and also to get very wet (the cost of this is not in the tour cost).
After this, lunch will be taken in a local restaurant. Following this there will be a choice of tours available. One will take participants to visit the National Park of Iguassu to visit the Bird and Butterfly park where many varieties of both types of wonderfully coloured winged species exist, naturally and harmoniously; it is a wonderful sight.
The other will take participants to the nearby Itaipu Dam on the Parana River. It is a short drive to this miracle of engineering that provides 20 per cent of Brazil’s power thru its hydroelectric plant.
The American Society of Civil Engineers has elected this dam to be one of its seven Wonders of the Modern World; it has 20 generating units and the plant is the largest generator of hydroelectricity in the world.
A visit will be made to see one of the working generators and be informed about the workings of the entire plant.

After returning to the hotel, the tour group will be taken to a local restaurant featuring a BBQ and folklore show. This show will feature customs, dances and songs from three countries which all border on the local Parana River: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Return will then be made to the hotel.
