Day 3 – Sunday, September 21, 2008

The group will have a restful day after the previous days activities. We will travel south by coach to the old colonial town of Paraty (www.paraty.com.br).

The drive will follow the coast the entire way and we will be able to see the rich forest mountainous countryside en route. As the drive will be about 4 hours we will stop on the way for a break and lunch.

We will arrive in mid afternoon in the town and after settling in at our hotel there we will enjoy a city tour. The hotel is an old country inn, the Pousada Porto Imperial (www.portotel.com.br) located centrally in the old town. Paraty is a beautiful colonial city founded in 1667 and considered a National and World Historical monument. In the 18th century its port was an important outlet for the gold and precious stones brought by horse from the northern state of Minas Gerais to be shipped to Portugal. We will explore the historic centre of the town, along cobbled streets free of cars, to enjoy the construction of old housing and churches reflecting the style of that era. After this, dinner will be taken in a local restaurant, and you will then be free to stroll around the town and enjoy the many art boutiques and nightlife locations that will be open.
