AGN member Esther Tan, Partner with GEP Associates in Malaysia, has been honored with the title of Dato’. She was awarded this title on 11th March by the Sultan of Pahang in a ceremony at Istana Pahang (Pahang Palace).
Dato’ is a title conferred by the rulers of one of the nine Malay states (Sultan or Governor), and is reserved for people who have contributed significantly to Malaysian society. It is a high honor similar to knighthood in the UK.
Esther acquired her professional status through articleship at an international firm in London in the 1970s. Prior to commencing her career in public accounting practice in Malaysia, Esther had several years of experience in audit as well as lecturing in accountancy in England and Malaysia. She opened her own public accounting practice in Kuala Lumpur in 1984.
Esther has spent many years in the accounting industry as well as in Rotary. She was the first woman President in the Rotary District 3300 in 1992-93 and the first Assistant Governor in the same District which covers a major portion of Malaysia. She is now the President 2015/16. She is a Fellow in the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, a Fellow in the Malaysian Institute of Taxation, and a member of the National Association of Women Entrepreneurs. She also obtained the award as “the Woman of the Year “ in 2006 in the Finance section.
Esther has been a member of the International Board of Directors since 2004 and is the first woman to serve as International Chair (2008-2009). She continues to serve on the Board today.
